Ride into the Hidden Kingdom

Upper Mustang is one of the most extraordinary and culturally preserved regions of Nepal, lying in the rain-shadow of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges near the Nepal–Tibet border. For centuries, this remote Himalayan landscape remained largely isolated from the outside world. Until 1992, Upper Mustang was a restricted area, and even today, access is carefully regulated to protect its unique culture, traditions, and fragile environment. An Upper Mustang Motorcycle Tour is far more than an ordinary road trip. It is an adventure into a landscape that feels almost otherworldly, where dramatic cliffs, barren valleys, ancient villages, high mountain passes, and centuries-old Tibetan Buddhist culture come together. Upper Mustang is made for riders looking for a real Himalayan challenge. The rugged mountain roads, rocky trails, river crossings, steep climbs, and changing terrain will test your riding skills, concentration, and endurance. Compared with a Lower mustang, riding in Upper Mustang is more demanding and remote. But every challenging section of the trail comes with its own reward. As you ride deeper into the Mustang Valley, you will experience spectacular views of snow-covered peaks, deep gorges, colorful rock formations, traditional villages, and vast Himalayan landscapes. The higher you ride, the more dramatic the scenery becomes. The clean mountain air, open valleys, and peaceful surroundings create a feeling of freedom that is difficult to find anywhere else.

The Walled City of Mustang

One of the major highlights of the motorcycle tour is Lo Manthang, the historic walled capital of Upper Mustang. Riding into Lo Manthang feels like entering another era. The ancient walled settlement is surrounded by dramatic Himalayan scenery and is home to historic monasteries, traditional mud-brick houses, narrow alleys, and centuries-old Tibetan Buddhist culture. From Lo Manthang, we also explore the fascinating Chosar Valley, famous for its ancient caves carved into the towering cliffs. These mysterious caves and old monasteries provide a remarkable glimpse into the history and spiritual traditions of the Mustang region. The road to Upper Mustang winds along the edges of deep valleys and rugged mountain slopes. Along the way, you may encounter waterfalls, dry riverbeds, rocky trails, high passes, and spectacular viewpoints overlooking the vast Mustang landscape. There are challenging sections where the terrain becomes rough and demanding, so you need good riding skills and confidence. The thin mountain air at higher elevations adds another element to the adventure, making proper acclimatisation and a steady pace important. But this is exactly what makes an Upper Mustang Motorcycle Tour so special. You are not simply riding from one destination to another. You are experiencing the landscape, culture, people, and raw beauty of one of Nepal's most remote Himalayan regions.

Experience the Living Culture of Mustang

Beyond the roads and mountains, the people of Mustang make the journey truly memorable. Traditional villages, prayer flags, ancient monasteries, local homes, and warm Himalayan hospitality are part of everyday life here. The friendly smiles and simple greetings of local people often become some of the most unforgettable moments of the trip. Upper Mustang offers something that cannot be found through photographs alone — the opportunity to experience a living Himalayan culture that has preserved its traditions for generations.

The Tiji Festival is one of the most important and colorful Buddhist festivals celebrated in Upper Mustang, Nepal. Traditionally held in Lo Manthang, this three-day festival is a sacred celebration of prayers, masked dances, music, and ancient Buddhist rituals. The festival symbolizes the victory of good over evil and is believed to bring peace, protection, and prosperity to the people of Mustang. During the celebration, monks from local monasteries perform traditional masked dances portraying the story of Dorje Shunu, a deity who defeats evil and protects the land. The historic Lo Manthang Royal Palace and surrounding square become the heart of the festival, bringing together local communities, monks, and visitors. The Mustang Tiji Festival Trek offers a rare opportunity to witness this living Himalayan tradition, explore ancient monasteries and villages, and experience the unique Tibetan-influenced culture and warm hospitality of Upper Mustang.

The Tiji Festival is celebrated annually in Lo Manthang, Upper Mustang, over three days. If you are planning to experience this unique Himalayan Buddhist festival, the upcoming dates are:

  • Tiji Festival 2027June 01–03, 2027
